LGBT Addiction Treatment

Studies published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration(SAMHSA) show that the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community are at higher risk for substance abuse than the general population.

When compared to the general population LGBT people are
-more likely to use alcohol and drugs
-have higher rates of substance abuse
-are less likely to abstain from use
-are more likely to continue drinking later in life

Heterosexism which is a system of bias and discrimination in favor of opposite sex sexuality and relationships contributes to internalized homophobia, shame and negative self-image. Those effects contribute to feelings of isolation, fear, depression, anger and anxiety which correlates with higher rates of alcohol and substance abuse.

Starting treatment requires courage. If no one needs to know but you, getting started is a lot easier.

Individualized Treatment

LGBT substance abusers as with all clients should be assessed regarding the type and amount of drug used, whether a withdrawal risk exists for their situation and the impact of psychosocial stressors to determine the appropriate level of care.

The types of programs offered for LGBT persons may need to be customized due to the health status of the client or their partner, their living arrangements, type and stability of employement and their level of comfort about their sexual orientation. Additionally it’s very often the case that LGBT clients have experienced discrimination and bias with past service providers and service systems.

Lionrock counselors will work with you individually to understand your needs and to set goals that fit with where you want to take your life. Through individual sessions and homework assignments, at Lionrock we give you a custom fit.

Upon completion of a Lionrock program we work with clients to create a custom discharge plan. This includes analysis of a client’s living environment, employment, social support network and ongoing issues related to sexual identity or orientation.
